FUNDER SPOTLIGHT: S. H. Cowell Foundation and
Morgan Family Foundation
The S. H. Cowell
Foundation engages in communities around northern California,
both urban neighborhoods and small towns, and strives to improve
the quality of life and opportunity in these communities by making
complementary grants across several program areas to organizations
that serve largely the same families and children.
The Morgan
Family Foundation supports efforts to strengthen the teaching
profession by providing teachers the necessary tools and training
to maximize their potential and the students they serve.
Partners in School Innovation is thrilled to have the support
of these two visionary foundations whose three-year $750,000 investment
in our English Language Development Initiative will enable us
to address one of the greatest needs in schools across California.
Said Ken Doane, Senior Program Officer of the S.H. Cowell Foundation,
"We see in PartnersSI's ELD Initiative the coming-together of
two distinctive funds of knowledge—how to effectively organize
and manage school improvement projects, and how to teach the English
language as a school subject—each of which is rare, and which
are unheard-of in combination."
Added Linda Verhulp, Program Director of the Morgan Family Foundation,
"It became evident that teachers and administrators did not have
available to them an effective approach to integrate professional
development in English Language Development and how to implement
these strategies within their classrooms using high quality practical
examples. We made an investment in PartnersSI to develop these
tools and strategies because of their leadership and direct relevant
experience working with English learners at chronically low-performing
schools."
