In September 2007, Partners in School Innovation launched a comprehensive
Leadership Development Initiative to develop results-oriented
leaders to serve urban low-performing schools. The initiative
addresses a felt need in the field by providing concrete tools
and examples of how to implement and build effective leadership
at an operational level; in other words, the skills, competencies
and processes that are required of a high-impact leader to turn
around a low-performing school, sustain improvement and close
the achievement gap.
MAJOR ACHIEVEMENTS
Improved Leadership: Through our leadership networks,
we have built the skills and confidence to close the achievement
gap in over 100 district leaders, principals and teachers from
over 50 low-performing elementary schools across San Jose Unified,
San Francisco Unified and Campbell Union School Districts. We
continue our networks in all three districts this year and one
additional school district: Oakland Unified.
Clear Leadership Examples: We created case studies and
vignettes to provide concrete portraits of highly effective school
leadership for the field.
Expanded Leadership Pipeline: More than 20 teacher leaders
who received our professional development have since moved into
administrative positions in partner school districts.
