Transformative Leadership in Schools: Lessons from Derek Mitchell on the Transformative Principal Podcast

As schools navigate a post-pandemic world, the role of school leaders has never been more critical. On the Transformative Principal podcast with Jethro Jones, Derek Mitchell, CEO of Partners in School Innovation, shared insights from his work supporting principals, teachers, and communities to create more equitable and student-centered schools.

Reimagining Schools After the Pandemic

Many held high hopes for schools after the pandemic—a chance for society to fully recognize the essential role schools play. Instead, Derek notes a troubling pattern: disengagement, undervaluing of teachers, and schools themselves becoming less welcoming.

Yet, amid these challenges, innovative leaders are finding ways to reimagine schools as hubs of community support. One middle school in Los Angeles tackled chronic truancy by listening directly to students. They discovered that basic needs—like access to clean clothes or feeling socially ready for the day—were keeping students away.

The solution? A laundry center in the school and a pop-up hair salon, partnerships with local businesses that brought students back into the classroom. Attendance improved by nearly half, proving that creative, community-focused solutions can make a huge difference.

Supporting Adults to Support Students

Improving schools isn’t just about students—it’s about supporting the adults who teach and lead them. Derek identifies three key factors that influence whether adults can act effectively: skills, will, and plan. Addressing each thoughtfully ensures that teachers and leaders can meet student needs without unnecessary frustration or burnout.

Practical Advice for School Leaders

For principals looking for actionable steps, Derek recommends:

  • Plan space between meetings. Without breaks, leaders can’t process decisions or act on what matters. Even a 30-minute buffer can improve focus and effectiveness.

  • Schedule dedicated classroom time. Being present in classrooms—not just to observe, but to engage with teachers and understand their perspective—builds trust and reinforces a shared vision for student learning.

Moving Forward

The pandemic highlighted both challenges and opportunities in education. By listening to students, partnering authentically with parents, and equipping adults to act with skill, will, and plan, schools can transform into centers of learning, growth, and community.
